For several years, the very popular Aston Martin DBS was made available with a 6-cylinder engine, while waiting for the Tadek Marek designed V8 engine to be released. Once released, the result was a four-seat two-door grand touring vehicle, capable of 160mph, named the Aston Martin DBS V8. Estimated to produce 315 and 320hp, the output was significantly better than the 282hp of the 6-cylinder engine. Two types of transmission were also made available: either a ZF 5-speed unit or a Chrysler Toqueflite automatic gearbox. Design-wise, the 1972 Aston Martin V8 was obviously based on the DBS, the main differences being a wider front air dam and alloy wheels to replace the traditional Aston Martin wire wheels. The Aston Martin V8 weighted about 250lbs more than the 6-cylinder version, because of the new engine, the ventilated brake discs, air-conditioning, fatter tires, and additional bodywork. At the time, the 1972 Aston Martin V8 was the fastest four-seat vehicle on the market!
