Selling a 1963 BMW 1500

1963 BMW 1500

Two years following its introduction to the public and one year into its full-scale production lifespan, the 1963 BMW 1500 was a fine continuation of the Neue Klasse (New Class) project that was so far going well for the Bavarian auto manufacturer. By that year, the company had its hands full with the designing, testing, and manufacturing of new additions to the New Class family, but there was still plenty of time for the 1963 BMW 1500 to leave its mark on automobile history. And there was still considerable demand for the lean-running, well-designed sedan that was managing to withdraw 80 horses of power from its 1.5-liter M10 SOHC motor and operating evenly in the upper thresholds of that machine’s performance.

Later designs would further shape the company’s brand/identity into what we know it as nowadays, but a few glimmers of what was to come are evident in the 1963 BMW 1500. Hardly a speed demon of a sedan, the 1500 nevertheless offered its driver a steady ride with ample visibility and practicality to spare. It was sufficiently stylish and tightly engineered to be acceptable as a bachelor/bachelorette rig, but spacious and accessible enough to accommodate the families for which it was actively designed. What the 1500 truly represents for BMW is a turning point in the company’s fortunes. The financial stability ushered in by the 1500’s excellent sales allowed the company to continue doing what it does best: namely, innovating. Present day sellers would do well to emphasize this aspect of the car’s place in BMW history, as details like that elevate machines beyond their engineering limitations and structural characteristics; they place them into useful context.
