Selling a 1966 BMW 1800

1966 BMW 1800

Over the past two-three generations, Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) has enjoyed a reputation for legitimate sportiness, fine luxury, and brilliant handling. In the case of many models/series, this collection of characteristics is housed within a practical, family-friendly body design. BMW has, in short, found a way of being all things to all people. But the so-called “Ultimate Driving Machine” was not always universally recognized as being; that distinction was years in the making. And the 1966 BMW 1800 served as a significant milestone in achieving that reputation BMW now enjoys. Now five years into its New Class production, BMW was redrawing the boundaries of engineering/design excellence with every new release. In this way, the 1966 BMW 1800 carried the torch proudly. With its crisp exterior, signature front grill, and sturdy chassis, this iteration of the 1800 did not deviate in any major way from the mold, but was released upon the public with a few enhancements and the trusted M10 beneath its hood.

What had propelled (so to speak) the 1800 models to commercial prominence was their mighty 1.8-liter engine, a machine that seemingly punched a bit above its weight. What had started out as a 1499 cc engine with an adequate 75-80 horsepower, was reconfigured to accommodate a bit more displacement and an additional 10 horses. Coupled with the intuitive structural/performance upgrades that BMW implemented throughout the 1960s, that extra motor strength graduated the 1800 to a level more on par with the BMW known to contemporary buyers. For that reason, sellers exploring the possibility of putting their own 1966 BMW 1800 on the open market will have much in the way of performance to emphasize.
