Selling a 1968 BMW E9

1968 BMW E9

In the late-1960s, BMW had a number of irons in the fire, so to speak. A number of New Class designs had been retired, at least one was in the latter years of its production timeframe, and the crowning achievement of BMW’s sedan design (the 2000 series) was poised for a successful marketplace run. But even with so much underway among its existing concepts, BMW was preparing to astound the automobile industry yet again. They would do exactly that with the 1968 BMW E9, a sports car to its very core and a consciously realized step away from the sedan sensibilities that had characterized the Neue Klasse project since its birth. Featuring an irresistible coupé body, an apparently oversized engine, and a brand name that was synonymous with quality, the 1968 BMW E9 came on the automotive scene with goodwill to spare and high expectations on the performance side.

If the popular and commercially successful New Class sedans had emphasized practicality and comfort while offering solid engine performance (courtesy of the solid M10), the 1968 BMW E9 was a motor with the chassis and frame added as necessary afterthoughts. So massive was the M30 engine in relation to the M10, that the E9’s engine compartment was almost exaggeratedly designed to accommodate its considerable dimensions. It was a worthwhile accommodation, particularly for lead foot drivers yearning for the race track, as the 2,788 cc engine generated a staggering 168 horsepower. Not even the gutsiest entries of the 2000 series could hold a candle to such a muscular drive, not that they had been intended to perform as such. Breakneck speed and top-notch handling was the domain of the racecar, and the 1968 E9 had been engineered along those very lines. BMW had set for itself a new standard of driving excellence, a standard which holds up in the present. There is a great deal to recommend the BMW E9 when selling to modern buyers; namely, the extremely favorable power/weight ratio and a gorgeous body design.
