Selling a 1970 BMW 1800

1970 BMW 1800

The 1970s were upon them, and BMW was honoring the past while embracing the present and readying for the future. Curiously, the 1970 BMW 1800 seemed to address each of these at once. Now in its eighth production year, the model was admittedly dated in relation to a number of other designs released by the Bavarian automobile manufacturer in the late-1960s. But the 1970 BMW 1800 had been met with commercial success and excellent reviews at its apex and, in the interest of keeping the model competitive, had undergone a series of minor tweaks and upgrades throughout its production lifespan. And while by 1970 the 1800 series was as much in competition with its own sisters as with any non-BMW competitors, the reliable, attractive, strong model did enjoy a production resurgence during that timeframe. Consumer demand had waned considerably, but for a vehicle whose manufacture began in 1963 to experience a sales revival of that sort said a great deal about its enduring popularity.

Explaining that popularity was a matter of examining engine performance, practicality, style, and reliability. All of these the 1970 BMW 1800 possessed to one degree or another. Specifically, the 1.8-liter M10 SOHC motor which had been refashioned from the original 1499 cc version to accommodate a slightly larger displacement, kept drivers satisfied with acceleration, top speed, and torque. None of this performance, sporty though it was, seemed at odds with the 1800’s stable feel, high visibility driving position, or tight handling. As BMW was entering the first decade following its storied recovery, it was doing so with a sedan that was singularly representative of its unique sense of balance. Modern drivers will immediately recognize the amalgamation of qualities which do not seem at first to align one with the other. That much is worth emphasizing in the selling process.
