Porsche 911 Turbo

Also known as the Porsche 930, the classic Porsche 911 Turbo is perhaps one of the most recognizable classics to come from the German automaker. Offered between 1975 and 1989, the Porsche 911 Turbo would be the brand’s top-of-the-line offering throughout its entire production duration. The 911 Turbo also holds the prestigious designation of being the fastest production car available in Germany at the time of its introduction. The history of the Porsche 911 Turbo is directly correlated to their racing heritage. Although Porsche had started experimenting with turbo charged engines on their race cars in the late 1950’s, the debut of the Porsche 911 Turbo would not happen until the 1973 Frankfurt Auto Show. This release was used to test the public’s interest in the design. A production version of the 91 Turbo would be released at the Paris Auto Show in 1974 and the car would officially be put into production in Europe for the 1975 model-year. In Europe, the car would be named simply as the 911 Turbo.” On the other hand, models bound for America would debut in 1976 using the internal designation “Porsche 930” or “Porsche Carrera.” Although the classic would quickly make a name for itself as being quite demanding, thanks to its rear engine and short wheelbase, enthusiasts loved it. Major changes would not come until 1978, when the engine was upgraded to a 3.3L and an air-to-air intercooler was added.
