1960 Mercedes Benz 190SL Seller’s Guide

190SL Max Hoffman, the Mercedes Benz U.S. importer of cars in the early 1950’s, had a vision for a sport touring auto that would find a place in the market as a complement to the prestigious 300SL. Hoffman’s marketing strategy was to capitalize on the 300SL’s illustrious win in the Carrera Panamericana Mexican road race of 1952, and anticipated high sales in the American market. At the time, the American market also brought great profits for the manufacturers of European sports cars. These were ideas Daimler-Benz could not overlook when Hoffman presented them. The 1960 Mercedes Benz 190SL was officially introduced in February 1954 at the International New York Motor Sport Show, and would run in production until 1963. Affordability also played a role in the success of the 190SL. Interestingly the 300SL was initially priced at $7,460, while the Mercedes 190SL was just $3,990. By the end of production, the 190SL outsold the 300SL nearly eight to one.
