Selling a 1969 BMW E9

1969 BMW E9

With the 1970s looming and an exceedingly prosperous decade at their back, BMW was poised to end the 1960s on a couple of high notes. Both sales wise and in design/engineering terms, Bavarian Motor Works had much going well for it as the New Class era embraced its midpoint. But this chapter of the Bavarian automobile manufacturer’s story belonged as much to a New Class offshoot as to the sedan concept itself. The offshoot was the 1969 BMW E9, a very well engineered racing design that had made a splash in the consumer realm a year earlier. Of course, the lion’s share of BMW’s sales at this time belonged to the New Class 1800 and 2000 series (emblems of the company’s return to prosperity). But the 1969 BMW E9 opened up a separate buying demographic which only slightly overlapped with the larger sedan market. The brilliant little coupé housed insane power beneath an elongated hood and offered pilots and passengers alike a sporty ride, which nothing in the New Class could match.

If production units were a reliable indicator (hint: they are), the 1969 BMW E9 was very much in demand. During its first year, a thin 138 units had been manufactured; a year later that number had burgeoned to over 3000. Horsepower was in, and the E9 possessed it in droves. With an engine displacement of 2,788 cc, the straight-6 SOHC yielded nearly 170 horses (125 kW) and torque of 173 lb·ft. That sort of motorized muscle encased in a beautiful coupé proved a tremendous win for BMW, which had calculated that the reputation for high end engine performance in its sedans would be doubly well-received when applied to a chassis that looked the racing part. It was a sensible calculation and one that further solidified the BMW reputation for engineering excellence. Even more than four decades later, the reputation endures. That in and of itself makes the BMW E9 selling process more favorable for the seller than might otherwise be the case.
