Selling a 1973 BMW E9

1973 BMW E9

Now well into the first full decade after its remarkable financial recovery, BMW had cultivated for itself a tremendous reputation based upon unimpeachable engineering, excellent design work, and sustained improvement of its designs and model variants with every passing year. Much of the reputation hinged upon what BMW had achieved with its dynamic M10 motor, a terrific machine which had been used in several iterations of the New Class sedan line. Remarkably, BMW transitioned seamlessly into a new centerpiece engine, the M30, and did so while ramping up its penetration of the full-on sports car market. Earlier BMW models, including certain sedans, had been sporty to an extent, but by the time of the 1973 BMW E9, the racing-centric coupé was a cornerstone of the company’s brand and its sales performance. Of course, BMW had no intention of becoming hemmed in to a single, limiting category of car design, but the coupé powerhouses had come to define the manufacturer’s racing pedigree.

Bavarian Motor Works has long been, as a brand, associated with excellent engineering and an uncanny blend of sophistication, practicality, and horsepower. There are no shortage of runners-up and would-be copycats, but the crown has always rested comfortably atop BMW’s head. While vehicle historians might correctly trace this impression to the first generation of New Class sedans (or earlier still), it was the 1973 BMW E9 and its predecessors within the series that irrefutably demonstrated what BMW was capable of producing in terms of performance, engine design, and style. And while 1973 was technically the beginning of the series’ manufacturing decline (unit production dropped by 700+), the E9 was a terrific success commercially and competitively. Based on the engine strength and gorgeous aesthetics alone, sellers have a highly marketable product on their hand. That said, there are right and wrong ways to market a classic.
