About Graber

 

Also known as Carrosserie Hermann Graber, Graber was a coachbuilder based in Wichtrach, Switzerland. Between 1927 and 1970, the company made designs for a large number of US and European automakers. Graber is especially known for providing unique and elegant bodies for British firm Alvis, for nearly 20 years. Carrosserie Graber started when Hermann Graber took over his father’s wheel making business in 1924 and decided to reconfigure it to produce car bodies. At the time, manufacturers were making models delivered to customers as rolling chassis and the firm designed unique bodies for a large number of them. The coach building business stopped in 1970 when Hermann Graber died, but the company kept operating, concentrating on repairs and maintenance. Between 1980 and 1996, Graber became an official Ferrari importer and was bought by a Swiss classic car restorer in 2001.

In 1927, Graber introduced its first design, which was a two seater cabriolet FIAT 509. The coachbuilder bodied a Panhard & Levassor 20 CV in 1929 and the model won the St. Moritz Concours d’Elegance, making Graber famous. Graber made a number of special designs for Alfa Romeo, Bentley, Bugatti, Duesenberg and Packard during the 1930s. Later, the company concentrated on the UK industry, designing bodies for Alvis, Bentley, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, Lagonda and Rover.
