Selling a 1970 BMW E9

1970 BMW E9

The 1970s had dawned, BMW was juggling a number of in-demand series at once, and the future looked bright for the Bavarian automobile manufacturer that had narrowly survived the 1950s and followed them up with a spectacular ‘60s. In 1970, both the New Class 1800 and its superior successor the 2000 were in production (though the former was nearing its end). Consumers had continued to vote with their wallets in favor of a BMW that seemed to place above most else their preferences and concerns. And Bavarian Motor Works was not affording itself the luxury of a complacent mentality, as the 1970 BMW E9 suggested. First introduced in 1968, the ultra-powerful little coupé had seen its production numbers increase over tenfold the following year. By 1970, that number had increased, this time from 3,400 to well over 5,000 units. What was significant about these figures was that they affirmed BMW’s ability to play in two markets with minimal overlap between them. The original sedans were satisfying conservative and/or family-oriented buyers, while the 1970 BMW E9 provided gratification for the heavy right feet of racers both professional and amateur.

There was no mistaking it—the 1970 BMW E9 was its engine, period. And what an engine. The enormous M30, a straight-six SOHC motor, required a lengthy front end to house its length and mass. This characteristic rendered the E9 famously distinctive and immediately betrayed its racing quality engine within. Cranking out 170 horsepower with its highly torqued design, the M30 pulled driver and chassis along with unbridled force and gave a legitimate sense of operating at the track. In the absence of suitable handling and a firm drive, this might have seemed more a liability than anything else. But the E9’s handled just fine and were well regarded by the pros for it. Any sensible seller will wrestle with a “Should I/Shouldn’t I?” question, but if the “should” wins out, you will have quite the ride to share with prospective buyers.
