Developers were busy at Porsche prior to the release of the 1968 lineup. In fact, it was a big year for the brand as they launched three new variations: two for Europe and one for the United States. The American model was the 1968 Porsche 911 L, which was used to replace the base model 911 just after the model year began. Standing for “Luxury,” the 911L was basically a 911S with a normal-tuned engine. It did, however, sell for approximately $600 more than the previous year’s model. During this time frame new safety and emissions regulations were being launched in the United States and Porsche also had to make a few changes in order to continue selling in that market. These changes included the add-on of side marker lights, which have become one of the ways to determine an American version from those released in Europe. The European market received a 911L as well as the 911T or “Touring” model. This was a more trimmed-down version and offered a slightly lower price tag. It was certainly popular among those buyers who had previously been unable to afford a Porsche.
