Selling a 1972 Porsche 911

1972 Porsche 911

The mid-1970s Porsche 911’s were known for their increased displacement, which increased horsepower and torque across the board. While compression ratios stayed relatively the same, these newer 911’s presented buyers with not only beautiful and aggressive good looks, but the power to back it up. The 1972 Porsche 911 offered even further increases in both displacement and wheelbase. Porsche’s desire was to maintain performance even despite calls from the United States for stiffer emissions and safety standards. California in particular, one of the largest markets for the 1972 911, was requiring even lower pollutant levels than other states and mandated the use of low-lead 91-octane gasoline beginning with this model-year. While Detroit responded by lowering compression and thus performance, Porsche would have nothing of the sort. They lowered compression, but increased displacement to offset any changes that would have been caused. Interestingly, all three engine types showed output gains and performance was barely affected.
