Buying or Selling a 1958 Lotus Elite?
The Lotus Elite Type 14 was unveiled at Earl’s Court in 1957 and the car was produced until 1963. First model of a series of sporty road cars, the Elite marked the beginning of the diversification from the race and kit cars built until then. The fabrication used a monococque structure with a fiberglass body, less costly than traditional aluminum and steel construction. Peter Kirwan-Taylor penned the body, creating an elegant two-seat coupe with a very low drag coefficient of 0.29. A 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine powered the car, producing 75 hp. The Elite was well equipped, boasting double wishbone suspension in the front, Chapman struts in the rear and all-wheel disc brakes when many other more expensive sports car of the era were still fitted with drums. Known as the Series 1, the 1958 Lotus Elite was wearing the lighter Maximar body shells in opposition to Series 2 models featuring Bristol plastics bodies.
