1956 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet

First introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September of 1955, the 1956 Mercedes Benz 220S Cabriolet was the shortened version of its sedan counterpart. The first car rolled off the assembly line in July of 1956. At the time, Mercedes recognized a need in the market for luxury cars that were not only for the super wealthy, but also models that could be enjoyed by hardworking businessmen, professionals and families alike. Featuring an independent suspension and additional floor reinforcements to make up for its open-air construction, the 220S Cabriolet was a hand-built masterpiece. Chrome covered the curvature of the car, and solid wood shaped the dashboard. The primary transmission was a four-speed manual with a large column shifter. Only 2,178 Cabriolet models were made between 1956 and 1960, and they would become known as the “Ponton” series; a word used for describing the 1940’s style pontoon front fenders and overall size of these 220S models. The 220S Cabriolet featured a 2.2L single overhead cam (SOHC) inline-six, delivering 100-115 horsepower and 119-152 lb. ft. of torque.

One of the most important steps you can take prior to selling your classic, particularly if it is road-worthy, is to have a third party inspection performed. During this inspection you’ll want to have the certified Mercedes mechanic check for rust as well. Rust plays a major role in these older Mercedes models.
